Soil & Fruit

Great Oak Vineyard is located on Las Posadas Road in Angwin on Howell Mountain at an elevation of 1721 feet, above the fog line.

Howell Mountain's climate of long, warm, sunny days with cool foggy mornings provides an ideal climate for grapevines.

The desirable Kidd loam soil is weathered from volcanic rock with moderate amounts of gravel which is considered favorable for grapevines because roots are able to exploit the soil/gravel interface to extend deeper into the soil profile.

The fine subangular blocky soil structure is also favorable to grapevines as it provides soil strength to resist deformation and compaction.

The soil tightness (friability/deformability) is only weakly consolidated with favorable depth.

Howell Mountain's climate is located above the fog line on the eastern side of the Napa Valley, the AVA is warmer and drier than other AVAs with more hours of sunshine and little-to-no marine influence.
